DIY: Simple Shoe Storage

Wow, did that weekend fly by or what?  I hate when that happens!

I have a problem.  A shoe problem.  Not so much of the purchasing kind (lie) but of the storing kind.  And one of these days, that problem is seriously going to hurt someone!  How you ask?  Take a look.

And this is on a good day!  I love our bungalow but the entryway (or lack that of) is a serious danger zone.  It's about a 3 ft square area with a door on one end and stairs on the other.  One false move and you're going head first down the stairs.

Since there is zero room to add any furniture in the entry way the only solution is to go downstairs.  My original idea was to put the new unit in this corner but I quickly had to readjust plans when it didn't fit the space as I had hoped.  Ooops!

But instead of taking it back, we moved to plan B.  Putting it in a different spot. Not a huge deal - except it will now it will take 5 extra steps to put your shoes we'll see how long this lasts :)

Beer is a must when putting together Ikea furniture.

Here's the finished product! So far, so good.
We are actually taking our shoes downstairs and saving lives.

Please excuse the empty beverage fridge.  We drank all the beer putting together the furniture.

We used baskets for flip flops and then in the winter for hats and gloves.

Not a genius idea, but sometimes it's the simplest things that can make the biggest difference.  I have dreams of creating a "mud room" in our other basement space.  But until then, at least we'll all be safe from the stairs.

  1. Love it! Those IKEA Expedit's are the best -- so versatile and affordable.

Also like seeing the hubby doing some grunt work ;)

  2. Great storage solution! I love using baskets and things like that too - we use a big water basin type basket for flip flops in the summer, and then we store hats/gloves/etc. in them in the winter too, and we store it right by the door for easy access. Maybe not the prettiest solution, but it's functional! Totally agree that beer is a furniture-assembly necessity, haha :)

  3. Ikea has the solutions to all home related problems! Love it!

  4. I love this idea! Our dog likes to steal and chew our shoes so getting them off the ground is a great idea. And the baskets to hold the winter stuff is FAB!!!! I think I may have a new project for this winter ;)

  5. There are several parking spots to accommodate loading and what not and there are several trolleys available to move small and large items in and out of storage unit.
