Skin Care 411

My skin has definitely seen better days.  This summer my skin has gone from dry to oily to broken out to then oily with dry patches.   Awful.  So I've decided I need to change up my skin care routine.  I've been collecting a ton of CVS coupons and doing my research so I decided to put myself on a month's challenge to try and get back to my old face!

Allure magazine just came out with their annual Beauty Insiders issue and it was chalk full of great advice and recommendations for products.  I'm going to share some of their useful tips along with my new skin care plan for the month.

Get Radiant Skin

  • Exfoliate daily with a oscillating brush but don’t use a scrub everyday; it will strip away the skin’s natural oils.  {I have the Olay version of the Clarisonic brush and I think it's a great alternative to the Clarisonic}
  • Apply an at-home peel with alpha hydroxyl once a week – or if your skin is sensitive, use a scrub with gentle beads.  Try Olay Total Effects Refreshing Citrus Scrub.
  • Pick a moisturizer with niacinamide or ceramides – both strengthen the lipid barrier.  Try CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion Am.
  • Brighten dark spots and uneven tone with serums or creams that contain lighteners such as hydroquirnone, soy or vitamin C.  Garnier Skin Renew Clinical Dark Spot Corrector.
  • Cheat a glow with a gradual self tanner.  Try Jergens Natural Glow.

Soothe Sensitive Skin

Use mild cleansers or creams with glycerin or dimethicone that are labeled “fragrance-free” or unscented”
Wash with a fragrance and soap free cleanser.  A milky one best for oil/combination skin.
Creamy one best for dry skin.
There’s no need to ever use a toner; even an alcohol free versions can be too harsh
Smooth on a fragrance free moisturizer for sensitive skin.  Try Olay Complete UV Moisturizer.
Apply a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher that has zinc oxide or titanium oxide which are less likely to cause a reaction.
At night, apply moisturizer to clean skin. Look for lotions with ceramides.
To reduce breakouts, use an acne lotion with no less than 2% salicylic acid.

3 Steps To Clear Skin

1.  To unclog pores: wash your face morning and night with a cleanser containing between .5 and 2% salicylic acid.  Like Biore Blemish Fighting Ice Cleanser.  Avoid washcloths – they rupture pimples.  Leave on for a minute then rinse with lukewarm water.

2.  During the day apply an oil-free noncomedogenic moisturizer to dry areas.  Always wear sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

3.  At night, pat a thin layer of 2.5 to 4% benzoyl peroxide lotion on breakouts and surrounding skin.  Try Neutrogena On the Spot Acne Treatment.

4 Ways To Calm Puffiness
1.        After a salty meal or a few cocktails, drink a large glass of water or cup of green tea before bed.
2.       Sleep with an extra pillow under your head.  The elevation helps prevent fluid from settling under the skin around your eyes.
3.       If you wake up puffy, dab a pea size drop of depuffing gel that contains caffeine on the area.   Clinique All About Eyes Serum De-Puffing Eye Massage
4.       For an at-home treatment, stick two wet tea bags (use caffeinated black tea) in the refrigerator for 15 minutes then place them on your eyes for 10 minutes.

4 Small Changes To Prevent Wrinkles

1. Squinting. Make sure your eye prescription is up-to-date and always be sure to wear sunglasses even on the cloudiest of days.

2. Resting your chin in your hand. This pulls and stretches the skin around your eyes, cheeks and chin. Overtime, you’ll lose elasticity and firmness.

3. Sleeping on a cotton pillowcase. Creases in cotton contribute to creases in your skin. Get your beauty sleep on a satin pillowcase instead.

4. Sipping through a straw. Dermatologists warn that using a straw will create fine lines around your mouth.

My 30 Day Plan

I'm going to commit to using these products below every day for 30 days (and nothing else) to see how my skin reacts.  I have combination skin that tends to be very sensitive so I made sure to choose really gentle/natural cleansers.  Not all of these products are brand new but I've never consistently used them on a daily basis.

Morning

Blemish Treatment: Clean & Clear Persa Gel 10
Eye Treatment: Garnier Ultra Anti-Wrinkle Eye Roller (with Retinol)

Night

Cleanser:  Cetaphil Gentle Daily Cleanser
Scrub: Neutrogena Naturals Daily Scrub along with my Olay ProX Brush (3x's a week)
Night Cream:  Olay Regenerist Mcro Scuplt Cream (supposed to be comparable to La Mer?)
Eye Treatment: Margot A&K Eye Cream.  From an awesome local spa in my area.

Have you tried any of these products?  Let me know if you have loved or hated any of them- - or if I should avoid something because it left you with a bad reaction!

Wish me luck!
